The Active People, Healthy INDYSM is a promotion to encourage residents of Marion County to become more physically active. Almost half of the residents in Marion County do not get even the minimally recommended amount of physical activity. Participating in physical activity has shown to decrease risk for major chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and even some types of cancers. Physical activity can have other benefits as well such as improved quality of life, better sleep, and decreased stress.
While exercise can offer unique health benefits, this promotion focuses on the everyday physical activity that can be achieved such as walking to the farmers market, bicycling to school, or taking the bus to the library. All of these actions increase our levels of physical activity while also creating a more walkable and bike-able communities by connecting everyday destinations through activity-friendly routes.
This initiative is a local adoption of Active People, Healthy Nation established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Please visit their webpage for more information on the national initiative to increase physical activity in 27 million Americans by 2027!
