Safe Sitter Classes

 

 

 

 

 

The Marion County Public Health Department is offering safe sitter classes for students in grades 6-8. The course is designed to prepare students to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. The instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises. Students get to use manikins to practice rescue skills such as choking rescue and CPR.

All classes are from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at 4012 N. Rural St.

Registration Information: 

The class fee is $30. Students need to bring a sack lunch. Eligible students are encouraged to register early as classes fill quickly. There is a limited number of economic hardship scholarships available.

Registration is required and spots fill quickly! All registrations must be completed two weeks prior to the class date. To register or request more information, please call 317.221.8953 or email aburse@marionhealth.org. All registration and class fees must be RECEIVED 2 weeks prior to the class date. Forms of payment accepted are cash, check, or money order. 

 

Safe Sitter Class Content

Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.
Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.
The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role plays.
Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering.
