Indianapolis Healthy Start
What We Do
Indianapolis Healthy Start provides education, referral and support services to pregnant women, fathers, families and babies up to 18 months. Our goal is to eliminate disparities in birth outcomes and infant survival rates in Marion County. We achieve this through comprehensive services including case management, health education and targeted outreach to program participants.
Understanding the critical importance of maternal and child health, we offer a variety of resources designed to empower families — such as safe sleep education, parenting classes, car seat safety classes, nutrition education, breastfeeding classes, job placement resources, transportation resources, community resources, and connections.
Our compassionate staff works closely with participants, guiding them through the complexities of pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting. We believe that by equipping families with knowledge and support, we can foster healthier communities.
Our clinical services address pressing issues related to maternal mortality and morbidity. This includes referrals for regular health screenings, access to prenatal care, and postpartum support to ensure women, infants and fathers receive the comprehensive care they need.
Our fatherhood engagement programs provide resources and support to help fathers become active participants in their families by tailoring resources to each father so that he feels connected and impactful within the family.
We believe that a supportive father can make a significant difference in a child's life, contributing to healthier outcomes overall. Through our various initiatives, we aim to create a supportive network that uplifts families and strengthens community ties, ultimately working toward a brighter future for all. Together, we can break the cycle of health disparities and promote equity in healthcare for every family in Marion County.

Indianapolis Healthy Start Referral Form
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) refers to the unexpected death of a baby younger than one year old, which remains unexplained even after a thorough investigation. Each year, thousands of babies in the United States die suddenly and unexpectedly from what are classified as Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID). Healthy Start has launched an active campaign to reduce SUID deaths in Marion County by providing safe sleep education. We also distribute cribs and pack 'n' plays to all families who complete the education program.

National Infant Mortality Awareness Month (NIMAM) is observed every September to raise awareness about the tragedy of infant deaths, promote education on prevention, and support affected families. Led by the National Healthy Start Association (NHSA), this initiative aims to reduce the infant mortality rate in the U.S. by educating the public about safe sleep practices and prenatal health, and addressing racial and economic disparities in healthcare.
The federally funded Healthy Start initiative is a program aimed at reducing infant and maternal mortality, which recognizes the importance of fathers in healthy birth outcomes. NHSA is in over 100 communities throughout the United States, and offers educational activities, an annual conference, and publications — including a monthly newsletter.
